What is Education?

The first thing that comes to mind when we hear the word Education is usually school or college. Education is often used to refer to the formal building of understanding and knowledge through day to day experiences. However the dictionary states that the word Education is “the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.” I have a different view on what Education is and what it means to me.
One of the most common ideas about education is that it is meant to prepare you for life. It gives you many skills that are like tools. These tolls can help you find a job. More importantly, they can help you work to an even better job. These skills can help you get along with your co-workers, neighbors and family. In the essay by Malcom X he states “Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened.” This shows that people open up to new things a lot. Education can help you stay healthy and live longer. It can also help you make a good choice when your in a difficult situation.
Education can make your universe a little bit bigger, by opening doors to things and ideas you never thought about before. If something catches your eye, you’ll just keep on going. Like in the movie Dead Poets Society the main character Neil discovers he wants to pursue acting. While his whole life his father has told him where to go and what to do, he finally breaks out from that and does what he wants.
Teachers can’t just hand knowledge to everyone. You can’t just buy it at any store either. Like Loren Eiseley said “But the teachers are not always to be found in school or in great laboratories. Sometimes what we learn depends upon our own powers of insight.” But in today’s society many people are starting to think and do things alike. This scares me and makes me think our society is just teaching everyone the same thing and not showing then to branch out and do their own thing.
The education of people starts at birth and continues throughout life. Some believe that it even begins before birth from your parents. So basically education is the process of being taught something important or essential to life.
Education to me is learning new things every day, either from someone showing you or just seeing things yourself. It is everywhere you go and in everything you do. We teach ourselves and learn from our own mistakes.
