Abortion is the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. It is one of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States each year. Many people are supporters of abortion and their reasons are varied. However, my feelings on abortion are varied.The most radical formulation of the “pro-life” side for the debate views abortion as the murder of an unborn child. Worldwide, there are approximately 46 million abortions per year and 126,000 per day. More than half of abortions are obtained in developing countries. In society today there are many different procedures you can take to having an abortion, like partial birth, dilatation and evacuation, and pregnancy reduction. One of these examples is RU-486, this pill is given to the mother and kills her baby by interfering with progesterone, the hormone which keeps the baby implanted in the wall of the mother’s uterus. Two days later, the woman returns to the doctor and receives a drug that induces labor and gets rid of the dead embryo. Most of these procedures are done by physically killing the baby with special tools. Many feel that this is very disturbing and wrong.There are many side effects people don’t know about that come along with having an abortion. The mother can suffer from breast cancer, failed abortion and hemorrhages. These women don’t know what they are actually doing to their bodies when they get the abortion. There are also many ways to prevent these things from happening. First is to just not have sex if in the end you are just going to kill this innocent child. You can also take different birth control drugs. An example is Norplant. It is an implant that is placed under the skin of the arm for up to 5 years and it suppresses ovulation. This hormone that is implanted prevents implantation of the embryo. I feel abortion should be illegal all over the world. Embryos are human beings and just because they aren’t born yet doesn’t mean they don’t have a heart beat. About 26 million women obtain legal abortions each year and 52% of them are under the age of 25. Abortions are a worldwide issue and needs to be stopped.
